In 1901 Sherlock Holmes returned from the dead after seven years in purgatory and found himself restored to an earthly hellscape on the heels of a devil dog. Before his full restoration in "The Adventure of the Empty House," Holmes would face his greatest and most famous mystery on the rocky hills and foggy dells of Dartmoor, surrounded by Bronze Age ruins, Dantean wilds, and a landscape of sublime desolation which serves as the natural foil to his urbane intellect.

As he, himself remarked, "the setting [was] a worthy one. If the devil did desire to have a hand in the affairs of men..." Doyle was inspired to resurrect Holmes from the Reichenbach Falls after spending a holiday in bleak Devonshire, listening to folktales of black devil dogs like the spectral Black Shuck, and pondering the uncanny juxtaposition of the neolithic landscape around him -- unchanged by the Industrial Age.

After reading the Gothic novel considered by many to be Holmes’ most compelling case, you can continue to read the best loved episodes from Dr. Watson’s casebooks as the novel is followed by sixteen of Holmes most famous mysteries, including “The Speckled Band,” “A Scandal in Bohemia,” and “The Final Problem.” Notes on these short stories will introduce and flesh out classic canonical figures like Irene Adler, Professor Moriarty, Mycroft, and Inspector Lestrade.

Annotated and illustrated, this collector's edition of Doyle’s best mysteries gives historical, literary, and scientific contexts to Sherlock Holmes' 17 most famous cases. From the hansom cabs and bustling streets of Victorian Westminster to the sparse, alien landscape of gloomy Dartmoor, follow in the steps of the Great Detective and encounter the Hound of the Baskervilles for yourself...
